Whatever our life experience we have developed knowledge and skills that we can apply to any situation.
Life hacks
I’m all for transferable skills and I find that much of what I learned in the corporate business environment can be valuable when applying it to the areas of my life I associate with life, healthy and weight loss coaching. From planning and processes to time management and reviews and analysis. Here are three of my strategies for simplifying the work, family home juggle. They help me create the physical and mental capacity to take care of myself too.
- Meal planning and online shopping
I have three, weekly meal plans that I rotate. Each weekly plan has an associated shopping list within my online shopping account and I simply upload each week and it gets delivered in my regular 6.30 to 7.30 Monday morning slot. I can do my weekly shopping in a matter of minutes and there’s no time wasted deliberating over what we should eat. And when my children get fed up of whatever it is they suddenly decide they don’t like I can just swap in another option and update the plan and shopping list. Very simple but effective.
- Putting my own time on my calendar
What I mean my this is that I schedule my time for house chores and relaxation, amongst everything else that needs doing, just like I would my work meetings, and then I honour them, just like I would a commitment to a work colleague.
Now this honouring my own plan to myself is a challenge for me but I am working on it. There are a several benefits, firstly I get more done – because I don’t stop to think about whether I feel doing it, and secondly it feels could do build up my reliability in myself.
- Continual review, analysis re-prioritisation and plans for improvements
I’ve always valued a weekly meeting, whether with my Manager or my team. That weekly check in to see we’ve done what we set out to do, check whether there has been a change in priorities and talk about ways for making improvements. I cannot imagine being in a business where this doesn’t happen. And I find it valuable to gift the time to do it for myself. I really enjoy finding somewhere peaceful, often its very early in the morning, and sitting down with a lovely cup of coffee.
